Venice is the capital of the Veneto region in northern Italy and has been built on more than 100 small islands in the Adriatic lagoon. There are only a few roads and almost entirely canals, like the Grand Canal with its Renaissance and Gothic palaces. In the middle of St. Mark 's Square is St. Mark's Basilica with Byzantine mosaics and a bell tower, from which the view stretches over the red roofs of the city.

Venice is a city of great beauty and cultural significance, but it is also unique and not like any other Italian city. As the capital of the Veneto Region of Northern Italy, Venice is actually situated on 117 small islands, which are connected by a series of bridges and separated by a network of canals. With a population of around 250,000, Venice is not one of the largest cities in Veneto, but one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Venice was an incredibly powerful fortress and a significant financial and military base during the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance. It was also a city that saw a great deal of cultural and artistic development and was well established throughout the world.

Coach Charter Germany offers the following recommendations for the top 10 locations for your itinerary in Venice:

1. Basilica of St. Mark's

Easily the most prestigious and famous building in Venice, St. Mark's Basilica is a beautiful piece of architecture that has been the test of time since its inception in 1092 and remains one of the most significant religious buildings in Northern Italy. Every feature of this church is amazing, from the ornate detail, the sculptures and the artwork of the front facade to the beautifully painted frescoes and Byzantine works of art on the inside of the domed ceiling. Located in Piazza San Marco, this basilica is easily accessible from the Grand Canal and is one of the most prominent examples of Byzantine architecture in Italy.

2. Square of St. Mark's

While St. Mark's Basilica is the most famous building in Venice, St. Mark 's Square is the most famous square in the world. Located on the Grand Canal, opposite the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, this square is of great importance in Venice and is a truly beautiful place to visit. Surrounding the Piazza, there is a series of ornate buildings with arched walkways that perfectly frame it. There are also several significant buildings on the square, including St Mark's Campanile, St Mark's Basilica, Doge 's Palace and Torre.

3. Grand Canal

Venice has literally hundreds of canals connecting the many islands that make up the city – the largest of which is the Canale Grande. This monumental canal is more like a river and flows from one side of Venice to the other and twists through the center of a wide S-shaped bend. Over 170 buildings dating back to the 13th century line the banks of the canal and have acted as a main waterway in the city for hundreds of years. Just four bridges span the Grand Canal, as residents and tourists normally walk along the canal.

4. The Pont of Rialto

As one of the bridges spanning the impressive Grand Canal, the Ponte di Rialto is perhaps the most prominent and iconic. Connecting the San Marco and San Polo districts of Venice, the bridge is a major pedestrian route, but also a popular tourist attraction. Originally a wooden bridge, it had been standing for hundreds of years until it collapsed in 1524. After this case, an ornate stone bridge was built that still stands today. The detail and design of the bridge is simply breathtaking and the symmetry of the bridge perfectly frames the Grand Canal. In addition, there is also a range of shops on the bridge that sell a variety of items from souvenirs to jewelry.

5. Gallerie dell'Accademia

Situated opposite the Ponte dell'Accademia on the Grand Canal, this museum houses a fine collection of pre-19th century art and features works by artists such as Bellini, Canaletto and Titian. The building where the gallery is situated was originally a monastery and was converted into a museum in the mid-to late 1700's. This gallery is for those who enjoy Renaissance art and modern masterpieces. Probably his best-known piece is Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, which portrays the ideal proportion of man. Other popular works include Tintoretto's Resurrection, Titian's Virgin and Child, and Titian's Resurrection.

6. Lido of Venice

If you're looking for a spot to relax and get away from most of the visitors, the Lido is the spot to go. This separate island acts as a barrier between Venice and the Adriatic Sea and features a long stretch of beautiful beach to enjoy. Home to about 20,000 residents, the Lido also has a host of residential areas, shops, restaurants and hotels.

7. Palace of Doges

Apart from the Basilica and the Campanile, one of the most prominent buildings in Venice, Doges Palace is also located on St. Mark 's Square, but looks out onto the Grand Canal. This ornate palace is simply breathtaking, and the front façade features a beautiful arched design made of white stone with a series of diamond patterns on the walls. Within, the palace is just as impressive, and there are a number of highly decorated rooms, many of which have original details, furniture and artwork. Tours of the palace are available and it is best to spend some time visiting both the exterior.

8. Bridge of the Sigh

While it is just a small bridge in the relative scheme of Venice, the Sighs Bridge is one of the most viewed structures in the city and an significant historical landmark. Passing over the Rio di Palazzo, the bridge connects the Prigioni Nuove to the Palace of the Doge. Tradition has it that, when the criminals were carried across the bridge from the Palace, they would have one last glimpse of Venice and sighed; anticipating their imminent punishment and imprisonment. It's also a must to see this famous bridge while visiting St. Mark 's Square.

9. Campanile San Marco

As the tallest structure in Venice, the bell tower is a majestic building at a height of 98.6 m. In fact, the building that stands now is a reconstruction as the original collapsed in 1902. Originally built in the 9th century, the bell tower was used as a watch tower. Over the years, the tower has been damaged by fire, earthquakes and even lightning. Built of simple red brick, the main shaft is very simple, but the bell tower and pinnacle features a multitude of arches and stonework, and the top features a golden statue of the Angel Gabriel.

10.  Murano Murano

Murano is another island in the Venice district – this area of land is basically made up of a number of small islands connected together by a number of canals and bridges (like Venice). Murano has a lovely charm and is often less busy than the main parts of Venice. This wonderful island town has many attractions, including the Basilica dei Santa Maria, the Campo Santo Stefano and the Palazzo Da Mula. In addition, Murano is famous for its glass blowing and you can see live demonstrations in the many factories that are set up here.

We trust that our points for your Venice Tour will make your itinerary in Venice very exciting. Venice is a perfect place to spend your holidays, offering a range of attractions that will please the most tastes.
